چکیده

Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) surfaces comprise about 90% of the highways and roads in the U.S. Highways and are typically engineered to last 15 years or more, but many have been failing early due to potholes, cracks, raveling, and other problems. This premature road failure unnecessarily wastes millions of taxpayer dollars every year. This paper describes a series of research studies that were conducted jointly by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the University of Washington to determine the reason for the premature failure of HMA paved roads, beginning in 1995. The studies used infrared (IR) thermographic and follow-up in situ nuclear density testing, laboratory analysis, and field evaluations. Study results confirmed that a major cause of premature mat failure stems from temperature differentials within the hotmix during laydown. Further research and actual road construction experience has confirmed that reblending the hot mix immediately prior to laydown can reduce or eliminate the problem. WSDOT has used these findings to supplement its HMA density specification with a new density test method for selected HMA construction projects in 2002 and thereafter.

Impact of Aggregate Gradation and Type on Hot Mix Asphalt Rutting In Egypt

Rutting of flexible pavement is considered one of the major pavement distresses noted around the world and in Egypt. Many investigators showed at about 55 to 80% of rutting occurred in the surface layer. Rutting of asphalt surface layer may be due to many causes happened during construction phase and service phase. The main objectives of this research are to evaluate the impact of aggregate gra...

Epoxy Asphalt Concrete (EAC) Used to Repave the Fremont Bridge in Portland Oregon

The Fremont Bridge is steel tied arch bridge over the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. It carries traffic on Interstate 405 and US Highway 30 between downtown and north Portland. . The bridge was constructed in 1973, and the paving on the original steel deck consisted of epoxy asphalt concrete followed by an asphalt concrete overlay. The pavement performed for nearly 40 years before it nee...

Engineering characterisation of epoxidized natural rubber-modified hot-mix asphalt

Road distress results in high maintenance costs. However, increased understandings of asphalt behaviour and properties coupled with technological developments have allowed paving technologists to examine the benefits of introducing additives and modifiers. As a result, polymers have become extremely popular as modifiers to improve the performance of the asphalt mix. This study investigates the ...

Utilization of Recycled Asphalt Concrete with Warm Mix Asphalt and Cost-Benefit Analysis

The asphalt paving industries are faced with two major problems. These two important challenges are generated with an increase in demand for environmentally friendly paving mixtures and the problem of rapidly rising raw materials. Recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is a critical necessity to save precious aggregates and reduce the use of costly bitumen. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technol...
